Solids

We first tried giving Braxton rice cereal around 4 months.  He was pretty good at eating from a spoon and swallowing, but he just didn't seem that interested.  He would take 2 or 3 bites and then refuse to open his mouth or turn his head away.  Then he would just get fussy.  We tried off and on for about 2 weeks and then just stopped.
At a little over 5 months we tried again but gave him avocado instead, thinking he might just want something with more taste.  That went over a little better, but we'd only get through half the bowl before he'd lose interest again.
A few weeks ago we tried butternut squash and he loved it!  Couldn't get it in his mouth fast enough!
We've also tried sweet potatoes, pears and carrots, peas and bananas.  He's loved them all.
trying to find more  food...and licking the tray
Devastated it was gone.

He has since throw us for a loop and only eats with his thumb in his mouth.  He's been a thumb sucker for a few months now (and we LOVE it!)... he uses it to self sooth or to indicate when he is hungry or tired.  He started sucking his thumb between bites of solid food when he was frantic and 'starving'.  Well now it seems that's how he swallows his food.  We've tried pulling it out and hold his arm down when we give him a bite but he can't figure out how to keep the food in his mouth and push it back and swallow and he has a major breakdown from getting so frustrated.  Clearly we've created a hard habit to break :/
We meet with the pediatrician this week for his 6 mth appointment and with the Cleft Team at Children's Hospital in 2 weeks... I'm hoping they've either seen this before and can offer good advice to get him to quit or tell us its no big deal.  I'm hoping once he starts eating bits of table food and he uses his own hands to feed himself he'll just get over it... wishful thinking?

Little Snow Bear

{February 4th}

We got our big snow of the year so far... about 2 1/2 feet here at our house

We took Braxton out to experience his first snow day.  He wasn't sure what was going on but he was a trooper!

we both thought it was too bright out

5 Months

Whhaaaat!?
How can this handsome little guy be 5 months already!?
He is getting too big and growing up too fast!
I feel like we are going to blink and he'll be 5.
There are a few good things about him turning 5 months, though...

He is So.Much.Fun right now.
I'm sure I'll say that every month from here on out but it's true.
He has become the most happy, mellow, easy baby.
If you talk to him or even look in his direction, he gives you big smiles and gets so excited.
He scrunches his nose up and smiles when he gets excited.
He is pretty good at just laying on his mat or jumping in the Jumperoo and just entertaining himself.
By entertaining, I mean jumping, sucking on his hands, or trying to chew on anything in his reach.

He is always wearing a bib because he drools all day long... his bib or clothes are soaked in a few hrs
He really only fusses or whines when he gets really hungry or he gets lonely and needs attention.
He definitely lets you know when he wants you to come watch him jump and to talk to him.
He is sleeping through the night.  We put him down around 7 or 7:30 and he wakes up at 6:30 or 7am.
He'll usually wake up and just lay in there awake for ~15 min, waiting for us to come get him.
Brian says he heard Braxton say MAMA, so clear, while he was in there waiting this morning.
{Wishful thinking that he actually meant it?}
He is still so close to rolling from his back to his tummy but we're still not there yet.
He just found his feet.
He is very ticklish... this is usually how we get most of his laughs.
When he can't stand the tickling anymore, he'll grunt or squeal.
We grow more crazy about this little nugget every single day.
Please don't get any bigger, OK!?
